Product Description
Amaretti di Saronno cookies go perfect with coffee, fine wine and after dinner liqeurs. According to legend, almost three centuries ago, the Cardinal of Milan unexpectedly visited the town of Saronno in Italy. To honor him, two young lovers, Giuseppe and Osolina, quickly baked up a mixture of sugar, apricot kernels, and egg whites, creating crisp, airy cookies with an unusual bittersweet flavor which they wrapped in pairs to symbolize their love. The Cardinal was delighted and blessed the young couple, who married and lived happily ever after. Since 1718 this ancient and secret recipe has been preserved by the Lazzaroni family. I bought this large bag of Lazzaroni Amaretti di Saronno because I don't need a decorative tin. I just want the excellent Italian cookies. These are the best there are anywhere!

I have sampled other Amaretti cookies but really the superior product is by Lazzaroni. I use these as the base to Maida Heatter's infamous Bullseye Cheesecake (the cookies must be crushed, of course). Needless to say these are sinfully good on their own, or with wine (or a glass of cold milk). In the past this product was carried in some of the finer food markets and even in Williams Sonoma, but I'm happy to find them through Amazon. I have several old tins so the refill bag works out well.

I have been looking for these for a long time. Came from the merchant quickly, packed adequately with no cookies crumbled, and obviously fresh. These are wonderfully addictive cookies. The shipping is high, but they are worth the cost, since they are so hard to find.
